Isazawa Kubo Cherry Blossom Tree
Edohigan, Cherry Blossom tree, a nationally designated natural monument
One of Japan's leading old Edohigan trees(Cherry blossom trees), which is said to be about 1200 years old.
The legend story of a tragic love between Sakanoue Tamura Maro and the daughter of a local lord, Odama, remains.
It is a huge tree with a height of 13m, and it was also called Yontan Sakura because its branches spread to four tan(a tan=992m2) in the Edo period.
During the cherry blossom season in Spring, the "Sakura Festival" is held, there are local shops and food stands , local sweets shop that provide special products, and Yamagata specialty "Tama konnyaku" are sold.
local guides who voluntarily dressed as Mr. Sakura((Cherry blossoms) are guiding freely about local information at the festival.
There are warm teas served, and it is crowded with many tourists.
In addition, the festival is lit up at night, creating a fantastic atmosphere. * Illuminated (from sunset to 22:00)
Currently, a parts of root has corroded and the tree vigor has declined, so the main trunk is divided into two parts.One on the south side and the other on the north side. With the advice of experts, measures to restore tree vigor are being planned.
